The Feast of Saint Andrew
Our present world has not heard Jesus’ message and cannot seem to find the hope we have in Christ. As we light our advent candles this year may we bring the Light of Christ into the world to dispel the darkness by sharing his love. Let us sift through the noise and chaos that overwhelms us, to discern the true song of the angels, shepherds, wise men and Christ child that call to us.
This morning as I was preparing to write my reflection, the Christmas song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town played. My mind cleared as I paused thinking the real Christmas song should be Jesus Christ is coming to you. All the hype and preparation for a good Christmas is evident all around us, let us stop and prepare to greet Him in our lives today. He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake. He knows if you’ve been bad or good. Yes, Jesus knows us and cares for us. How do we get ready to meet Jesus on Christmas?Listen carefully to what God calls you to do as you Come and Follow Him.
In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus calls Peter and Andrew. His message was simple, COME, FOLLOW ME and I will make you fish for people. Come follow me is the call Jesus gives to all his disciples. We recall the birth of the Christ child with the benefit of knowing how he lived his life and set an example for us to live as he wants us to. One of the best ways to follow Jesus is to know his word, “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart” Romans 10:8. We still must take the initiative and let his word live in us so that we believe in the power of his word that we have witnessed throughout his life. Faith is the yeast that activates his word in our lives. As we await Christmas this year, let us take that Faith let it grow with warmth so Christ’s word may be heard in our world.
I like how the Psalm 19 attunes us to the world. The heavens declare God’s glory; I need to listen closely to the heavens. The skies proclaim the work of his hands, gaze at the sky, the clouds, the stars, the moon and the earth around us to see how his beautiful work reveals the greatness of our God. In quiet reflection we absorb the earth’s message of God our Creator and bask in his warmth. This Advent let us heartily invite Jesus to be the centre of our lives. Like all the preparations, sending cards, visiting friends, helping the poor, may our lives move to make this a blessed Christmas not only for ourselves but the world. Take time to see the joy in each other, the beauty of creation and worship Emmanuel, ("the Lord with us"). May it be so.
Almighty God, you gave such grace to your apostle Andrew that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ, and brought his brother with him. Give us, who are called by your holy Word, grace to follow him without delay, and to bring those near to us into His gracious presence, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
